The "Resonance" performance is an avant-garde crossover music concert featuring jazz pianist Chulsoo Kim, haegeum player Heeyoung Kim, and Namhaean Byeolsingut janggu player and singer Hyunho Lee. This is the ninth concert in Chulsoo Kim's "Inspiration" series, which he has presented annually with different themes. This year's performance is composed of stories and music inspired by fragments of the history of Korean immigration to Hawaii.
Consisting of seven pieces, five of which—excluding the intro and outro—are newly created stories inspired by actual historical events or moments in Korean immigrant history. These compositions are based on improvisation but draw from traditional forms of the Namhaean Byeolsingut, such as Bujeonggut, Jidonggut, Jaeseokgut, Daesinpuri, Neokpuri, and Aeksalpuri. These traditional rituals are met with modern reinterpretation, blending traditional ceremonial forms with contemporary expression.
The audience can access the stories connected to each piece through QR codes, allowing them to appreciate the music with context or experience the resonance of the music freely, without a story, just as one might when witnessing a gut ritual. This performance deeply resonates with and blesses the lives and journeys of Korean immigrants in Hawaii.
